BOTH GWEEDORE UNITED and their neighbours Gweedore Celtic got wins on Saturday in the Donegal Youth League.

Gweedore United 3-1 Keadue Rovers

This local derby played under the floodlights at Carrickboyle in perfect conditions in front of a large turnout saw the home side claim all three points in a tight encounter.

This game started with both sides keeping things tight and giving very little away. United broke the deadlock in the 12th minute when Jamie Mc Gee sent a long pass to Dennis Coll who laid off for Shaun McFadden to finish well from close range. Keadue were back on level terms four minutes later when Christy Greene finished well following good play by Keadue who began to push.

Following the equalising goal there were good chances at both ends through Dennis Coll, Noel Sweeney and Shane Langan for the home side. Christy Greene and Jordan Duggan went close for Keadue, however the United defence lead by Conor Mc Fadden and Dean Mc Colgan stood firm.

The United midfield of Odhran Mc Fadden and Noel Sweeney began to dominate the play in the middle with good football being played. Dennis Coll made it 2-1 to the home side in the 39th minute when he finished well past Devlin following good work by John Brown on the right wing.

In the second half United settled well and had good chances through Langan and Coll but Daniel Devlin in the Rovers nets did well on each occasion. Daniel Ward hit a good shot in the 75th minute, however Jamie Hunter in the United nets was excellent throughout.

Mark Mc Fadden came off the bench for United and he ensured the 3 points for United in the 84th minute when he scored a good goal from 20 yards following good individual work.

Ryan Connors hit the crossbar for Kaedue in the  88th minute, however it ended with a 3-1 win for the home side. James Mc Cole, Jordan Duggan and Christy Greene played well for Keadue and it was a good strong team performance from United on the night.

Gweedore Celtic 2-1 Letterkenny Rovers

A good performance by Paddy Duggan’s U-18 squad yesterday at An Screaban with three well earned points against league holders Letterkenny Rovers managed by Anthony Gorman.

The visitors went in front through Ryan McLaughlin before Conor Boyle levelled after the break. The winner came from Kyran Glennon in the closing stages.

Ryan Kelly, Padraig Gallagher and Sean O Donnell all featured heavily in the first team this season. Best for Na Ceiltigh yesterday were Ciaran McHugh, Conor Boyle, Kyran Glennon, Conor Duggan. We also wish Conor Boyle a quick recovery after picking up a knock.

Swilly Rovers 0-3 Drumkeen United
On a fiercely contested match in Swilly Park it was Drumkeen United who emerged victorious against a weakened Swilly side who were missing nine players from there squad players due to a Gaelic final and injuries, with probably the most notable absentee being Dane Dunworth which forced Swilly to field outfield player Brian Diver in goals for the contest.

Kevin Bonner

Kevin Bonner, who scored for Drumkeen United against Swilly Rovers

In the opening exchanges both teams passed the ball without any great penetration almost feeling each other out, but in the seventh minute Drumkeen took the lead through Kevin Bonner from a free kick that fortuitously evaded the Swilly wall beating Brian Diver in the Swilly goal.

Drumkeen’s direct approach was causing Swilly all kinds of problems with the pace of Drumkeens Anthony Bogle being used to great effect and those tactics proved successful for Drumkeen with Bogle making it 2-0 on 18 minutes.

The second half began as the first had ended with Swilly pressing for a goal that would get them back into the game while Drumkeen continued to try utilise Bogles pace on the break. Midway through the second half Drumkeen made it 3-0 through Daniel Bonner from the penalty spot.
