Golden Boy request top-ten world ranking for Jason Quigley

GOLDEN Boy Promotions made a request for the World Boxing Council to give Jason Quigley a top-ten ranking.

The proposal was made at the latest WBC rankings meeting.

Golden Boy’s eagerness for Quigley to be given a slot in the top ten in the middleweight division heightens the belief that a big bout is looming for the Ballybofey man.

Currently, Quigley (18-1, 14KOs) is at number 14 on the WBC’s middleweight rankings list.

Quigley – previously in the WBC’s top five – has been to the fore in the queue to face Mexican superstar Canelo Álvarez, who was said to be returning to the ring on September 12. Although that date is now likely to be pushed back, Quigley remains a live possibility to face Álvarez, who is also promoted by Golden Boy Promotions.

Álvarez, the middleweight champion and super-middleweight titlist, has not fought since November 2019 and the Andy Lee-trained Quigley has confirmed his candidacy.

“I want to get in there because I want to test myself and I want to see how good Canelo really is,” he said in a recent interview.

“He is the main man in boxing right now. This is what it’s all about. I want to get in there with the best, I want to test myself and I want to test them.

“If I had a chance to fight Demetrius Andrade or a few of the other world champions in or around these divisions, I would decline all of those fights to fight Canelo.”

Golden Boy Promotions are also understood to be lining up an October card to be headlined by Mexican middleweight Jaime Munguía, who is ranked by three of the four governing bodies: WBO #1, WBC #2 and IBF #10.

Munguía, also in the Golden Boy stable, was at ringside in October 2018 when Quigley defeated Freddy Hernandez to defend the NABF middleweight title.

Quigley has made no secret that Munguía is also on his radar and a meeting with the former WBO light-middleweight champion seems a very likely course of action should a Canelo showdown evade the Donegal puncher.

Munguía has wins over Irish boxers Dennis Hogan and Gary O’Sullivan to his name, but last month Quigley told Jess Rosales in an interview: “Jaime Munguia has beat a few Irish lads already, I have to get him for that first and foremost and then I have to get him then for pushing on to become a world champion.

“I definitely think that’s a fight that possible to make and should be made. I would love that fight.”

The WBC have said that they will wait for ‘some activity’ before making a determination on the proposal to grant Golden Boy’s request for Quigley to get a top-ten ranking. In seeking the significant move, the promoter clearly has a plan in mind for for the former World amateur silver medalist and European champion.
