Glory for ‘Greeks’: Greencastle FC crowned champions as Glengad held by Carn

Pat McLaughlin beamed as Greencastle FC were crowned Jackie Crossan Premier Division champions for the first time tonight.

While the Greeks were playing in a Knockalla Caravans Senior Cup semi-final at Bonagee, their ears were tuned to news from the Crua.

Defending champions Glengad’s failure to beat Carn FC – they played out a one-all draw – means that Greencastle are champions.

“It’s brilliant,” McLaughlin said.

“These boys deserve it. They have put in some effort.

“It’s a great night for the club. It’s unbelievable. That was our aim when we took on the job.

“The Inishowen league is so tough to win. There are a load of quality teams there

At half-time in the Knockalla semi-final, John D O’Kane, the Carndonagh manager, called McLaughlin with the news that Ryan Kelly’s equaliser, cancelling out Seamus Doherty’s opener for Glengad, had decided the destination.

Greencastle have won all 14 of their games so far and, although they lost 2-0 to Bonagee, through goals from Jordan Armstrong and Ryan Rainey, there was delight for the Chapel Lane side.

McLaughlin said: “This season has been brilliant and the boys have done everything we’ve asked. Their work ethic is amazing. The committee will be absolutely thrilled. It’s unbelievable for the area.”

Greencastle have two games remaining – against Carn on Sunday and another against Glengad.
