Glenfin’s ‘Great Escape’ plans remain alive

THE GREAT ESCAPE is well and truly on for Glenfin after they overcame Cloughaneely at Pairc Taobhoige.

Glenfin 0-12 Cloughaneely 1-07

Six weeks on from an 11-point scalping to Fanad that seemed to have all but relegated them, the An Gaeltacht Lar men are just a playoff win against Burt away from retaining their Division 2 status.

In a game played in gale-force conditions, it was the home side who had the elements in their favour in the first half.

Glenfin free specialist Paddy O’Connor made full use of the wind, blasting over three long range frees in the opening minutes.

Cloughaneely took a long time to get to grips with things. almost 20 minutes had been played when they finally registered through a John Fitzgerald free.

Further points for Glenfin came from Paddy Costello and Daniel McGlynn, although the latter really should have tested Shaun McClafferty in the Cloughaneely goal.

It was not to be the only goal chance Glenfin would miss in the first half, and after another Fitzgerald score the sides went in with just five points between them at the break.

With the favourable gusts now in the away sides favour, Glenfin came out in the second half expecting a siege to be laid upon them, but it never arrived.

Points from Stephen Ward and O’Connor extended Glenfins lead, and only a late late Cloughaneely penalty – converted by Kieran Sweeney – put a gloss on the scoreline for the away side.

Gaeil Fhánada’s defeat by Naomh Columba means that they are relegated, but Glenfin are now just one win away from pulling off a manoeuvre that even Steve McQueen would be proud of.
