GLENFIN have a chance to progress to the quarter-finals of the RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta SFC following their narrow victory over Cloughaneely in Falcarragh this afternoon.

Cloughaneely 1-11 Glenfin 1-12

After losing from a winning position against Four Masters on their first excursion in the competition in May, Glenfin welcome St Michael’s next weekend. And while Cloughaneely will certainly be disappointed to lose out this afternoon, they too have a chance of progression. A win at Four Masters is a must for starters.

At half-time, Glenfin were 1-7 to 0-6 up at Cloughaneely with a goal from Mark McGinty Jnr on 25 minutes when he was on the end of a flowing move.

Before that, it was tit for tat for spells. Paddy O’Connor and Conor Ward pointed to put the away side 0-2 to 0-0 up before Denis Boyle got the hosts off the mark.

By the 22nd minute, Cloughaneely were at themselves, 0-6 to 0-5 up, with Shaun McGarvey, Ward and O’Connor adding three in succession.

However, having come out for the second half four down, the loss to Boyle to a black card was a significant blow. But the pottered away and after Paul Sweeney was fouled, Declan McGarvey’s penalty on 41 minutes cut Glenfin’s lead to three, 1-10 to 1-7.

Cillian Gallagher and Martin Maguire took the deficit down to on but Ward’s free kept Liam Ward’s team two up, only to see that halved when Declan McGarvey pointed. After Stephen McGlynn got a black card, Declan mcGarvey missed a free to level it and Ward made Cloughaneely pay.
