Gleneely Colts form unique guard of honour for brave Lorraine

written by Rachel McLaughlin April 3, 2020

A FOOTBALL club in Donegal created a special ‘guard of honour’ today to honour a local mother and care worker who sadly passed away.
Lorraine Millar (nee Diver) of Gleneely, passed away on 31st of March following a battle with cancer.
Her son, Ben, played for Gleneely Colts.

Due to the major restrictions in place, owing to the Covid-19 crisis, mourners could not gather together to celebrate her in person.

As is the case with all deaths in Ireland at present, the restrictions have been especially difficult for those who want nothing more than to come together and pay their respects to families.

A special guard of honour was created by Gleneely Colts Football Club to express their sympathies with Ben, who plays for the club, and the wider family.

Instead of a physical guard of honour, members put their jerseys on display along the perimeter of Glenview Park as a poignant representation of their support at this time.

The 44-year-old mother of two was a hugely popular wife, mum, daughter, sister and a friend to many.

She touched many lives and has been described as ‘an angel on Earth’ by those who had the privilege of knowing her.

Almost €11,000 was raised in aid of the Millar family last year with the kind support of local clubs,  businesses and individuals.
Lorraine’s husband Stephen, son Ben, and daughter Katie are being comforted by family at this time.

Instead, Lorraine’s friends shared their heartache online and in unique ways in the local community.

A memorial page was established on Facebook as a focal point for touching tributes to Lorraine’s caring ways and unforgettable kindness.

The page hosted a live stream of her funeral mass from St Mary’s Church Culdaff today shared by Fr Haan. A slideshow video of precious memories is also being shared far and wide.
