Geraldine McLaughlin set to return to give Donegal ladies huge boost

Geraldine McLaughlin is poised to make her return for the Donegal ladies – and could feature in Sunday’s away clash with Monaghan.

The Termon woman – pictured by Geraldine Diver – has not played so far in 2018 after having corrective surgery on a knee injury.

But sharp-shooter McLaughlin is ready for action again ahead of Sunday’s trip to Monaghan for a game that is a repeat of last year’s Ulster final, won by Donegal.

Donegal are also set to meet the Farney in an Ulster semi-final in the summer.

After a whopping 9-17 to 1-5 win over Westmeath on Sunday in Derrylin, the addition of McLaughlin to that front-line would come as a huge shot in the arm.

“It’s quite possible,” Donegal joint manager Maxi Curran said.

“She is within her timeframes now. She could, possibly, have played against Westmeath if we had needed her. It’s important that she comes back when the time is right.

“There’s no such thing as a one-man show these days. We are blessed with a lot of good players.

“Geraldine gets a lot of headlines and has been the marquee forward for the last couple of years. It will give other teams something else to worry about when she does come back.”

Yvonne Bonner hit 3-6 against Westmeath with Niamh Hegarty helping herself to 2-1 in the rout if Westmeath.

Curran said: “We’ve been working at getting others to step up on a continuous basis to lead the team. All the successful teams have two three forwards who can win a game on a given day.”
