How does Gaoth Dobhair-Bundoran scoreline stand up in history books?

Gaoth Dobhair’s stunning win over Bundoran yesterday evening had the tongues wagging in Ballybofey and beyond – but where does it stand in the history books?

Gaoth Dobhair went goal crazy, bagging eight goals in an 8-13 to 3-12 win.

Dáire Ó Baoill (pictured) netted twice for Gaoth Dobhair, with Niall Friel, Naoise Ó Baoill, Kevin Cassidy, Eamonn Collum, Cian Mulligan and James Carroll all raising green flags in a 16-point win.

Six of the Gaoth Dobhair goals came in the second half and it was noteworthy that Bundoran’s 3-12 would have been enough to beat any of their other quarter-finalists’ tallies over the weekend.

The game goes into the history books as the highest-scoring game on record in the Donegal senior football championship.

The 11 goals and 25 points is a new high for Donegal football. Who said defensive football had taken over?

Gaoth Dobhair were close to setting a new record for a single team in a Donegal SFC match.

That tally is still held by Dungloe’s class of 1964.

In a quarter-final match that was dubbed by the Donegal Democrat at the time as ‘The Cricket Score Game’, Dungloe defeated Inishowen 9-12 to 3-5.

The game was delayed when appointed officials Peadar McGeehin and Gerry Griffin failed to show, but Patrick O’Flanagan took charge of the game.

Inishowen might have wished he hadn’t agreed. By half-time, they were 4-7 to 0-3 in arrears. Joe Joyce bagged a hat-trick and had another disallowed for a square ball infringement, with Sean O’Donnell on the mark with another.

Dungloe showed no let up with Sean Ferriter, Pat Murphy, Aloysius Bonar, John Campbell and Dermot Logue all finding the net.

The Inishowen goals were score by Robert McCool, James Dowds and the third went down as ‘a scramble’.

Yesterday was only the third time in history that a team hit eight goals in the Donegal SFC – the other was in 1925 when Dungloe defeated Letterkenny Rovers 8-4 to 0-2.
