Gallery: Huge turnout in St Johnston for Brett McGinty’s return home

THE TOWNLAND OF MONGAVLIN, a mile outside of St Johnston, reeks of history. There lies the scattered ruins of Mongavlin Castle, once a stronghold of the O’Donnells in the 16th century. The Castle was also centrally used during the Siege of Derry.

There was an invasion of a different kind last night in Mongavlin. It is here, in this once fabled townland, where the McGinty family reside.

Brett McGinty returned home from Samoa with a silver medal around his neck. A boxer with the Oakleaf ABC in Derry, McGinty – who celebrated his 17th birthday on Sunday – won silver in the 69kgs category at the Commonwealth Youth Games.

Family, friends and the boxing fraternity turned out in their droves to welcome McGinty back home from Apia.
