Gallant effort as Magees rattle Olympic champions before exiting World stage

Chloe and Sam Magee bowed out of the BWF World Championships despite a gallant effort against the reigning Olympic champions in Glasgow today.

At the Emirates Arena, the Raphoe duo lost out 21-19 16-21 10-21 to Liliyana Natsir and Tontowi Ahmad of Indonesia.

At the Olympic Games last summer in Rio, Natsir and Ahmad defeated Chang Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying from Malaysia to win the mixed doubles gold.

In the opening game today, the Magees – buoyed by Tuesday’s win over Japan’s Yuta Watanabe and Arisa Higashino – out-played their illustrious opponents, currently ranked three in the world.

The Magees took the first game 21-19.

But the Indonesian pair upped the ante for the second frame and overcame the under pressure Magees 21-16 before claiming the third, crucial game 21-10.

However, it has been a Championships that has lifted the confidence again of the Magees, who are really making waves in the mixed doubles game now.

The Raphoe brother and sister defeated Japan’s Watanabe and Higashino after three rip-roaring games on Tuesday to win 21-13, 16-21, 21-15.

The Japanese pair are 22nd in the world rankings and were one of the seeded pairings in Scotland.

This year, already, the Magees won a bronze medal at the European Championships, defeating Polish pair Robert Mateusiak and Nadiezda Zieba in Denmark, before missing out in the semi-final against Denmark’s Joachim Fischer Nielsen and Christinna Pedersen.
