GAEIL FHANÁDA PUT some hurt behind them to win the Ladies Junior Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta Tír Chonaill at Glenties Comprehensive this afternoon.

Gaeil Fhanáda 4-8 Naomh Muire 2-8

The side from the peninsula had lost their previous six finals in all competitions but were rewarded for their patience against a battling Naomh Muire side.

The team from the peninsula were 2-3 to 1-2 in front at half-time, with two early goals providing a solid foundation.

The first of those arrived on five minutes when Mairead Coll got through on goal and shot past Karen McGarvey.

Then, the second arrived on 25 minutes when Michelle Doherty got the better McGarvey to make it 2-2 to 0-2.

Naomh Muire had plenty of the ball but needed something to spark their challenge into life and they got a goal two minutes before the break when Erica Hannah slapped in a dropping ball from Caroline Sharkey.

Gaeil Fhanáda at that stage had lost Doherty to a 10-minute sin-bin so it was all to play for the second half.

After the break, it was much more open and Gaeil Fhanáda substitute Caoimhe Walsh goaled for her team 50m seconds after coming on.

However, a goal from Ellie Treacy of Naomh Muire, followed by a point moments later meant the team from the Banks were just 3-3 to 2-4 behind.

Gaeil Fhanáda grabbed their fourth goal when Doherty scored a penalty after Nicole Boyle was penalised for a foul on Walsh on 41 minutes.

Naomh Muire kept in the hunt with Caroline Sharkey impressing but Gaeil Fhanáda managed to keep them at arm’s length for the remainder of the contest.
