GAA official queries midweek games as clubs sent for long hauls this evening

A leading GAA official in Inishowen has questioned playing a round of Under-16 Championship games this evening, given the distances involved for some of the teams.

Gerard Callaghan notes that five teams from the Inishowen peninsula will make round trips of a combined 580 miles.

In round 3 of the U16 Championship, Urris have the furthest to travel. Urris players left from school to go to their game against Kilcar in Towney.

Carndonagh are away to Downings in another long haul.

Buncrana make the long pilgrimage to Naomh Columba in Glencolmcille, while Naomh Colmcille travel to face Naomh Muire and Naomh Padraig of Muff are away to St Eunan’s.

“I suppose it is just the way the fixtures worked out for this week, but it is not good for students who are preparing for exams,” Callaghan told Donegal Daily/Donegal Sport Hub.

“Many of these players will sit their Junior Cert in a couple of weeks’ time and parents are concerned at these long trips for games on a school night.”
