Fresh blow for Donegal as Odhrán Mac Niallais withdraws from panel

DONEGAL have been hit with a fresh blow for the 2017 season following the news that Odhrán Mac Niallais is opting out of the squad.

Speculation had been mounting in recent weeks about the Gaoth Dobhair man’s future.

Following Donegal’s exit from the 2016 All-Ireland SFC, Mac Niallais played soccer in the Donegal League with Gweedore Celtic.

The Donegal senior football panel has been back in training for a number of weeks now, but Mac Niallais has been absent.

While it has been reported that the player is to take a year out to travel to America, the player is unsure as to his next move, but has confirmed that he will not be part of the Donegal squad for this year’s Allianz League or Ulster Championship campaigns.

Mac Niallais came to prominence in 2014 when he made a place his own and played a lead role as Donegal won the Ulster Championship and reached the All-Ireland final.

The news is a body blow for Donegal as it comes just a week after Leo McLoone confirmed that he will not be making himself available for selection while this morning’s Irish Independent is reporting that Anthony Thompson’s future is unclear.
