Four hours, 215 kilometres – and no game: One Donegal team’s wasted Sunday

A TEAM of Donegal footballers made a round trip of some 215 kilometres yesterday, but had their game called off.

Carndonagh’s Gaelic footballers made the arduous trek to Dooey to take on Na Rossa yesterday in Division 4 of the AllSportStore.com All-County Football League.

It’s more than a two-hour journey each way from their base, but Carndonagh arrived at their destination, did the warm-up and were ready to go, only for the fixture to be called off as a result of a waterlogged pitch.

Na Rossa had beaten Robert Emmets 0-10 to 0-9 on Saturday evening at the same venue.

However, when referee Robbie O’Donnell inspected the surface before yesterday’s game, he deemed it unplayable.

“We traveled down, for over two hours each way, warmed up and then had no game,” sighed the Carndonagh manager Kieran Canny.

“We had lads take time off work, time out of studying for exams and all of that for nothing. It’s so frustrating and it’s hard enough to get a team out these days.”

The video below shows the state of the pitch and Carndonagh’s frustrations were heighened that they didn’t get prior notice before leaving Inishowen.

The Donegal Competitions Controls Committee (CCC) will discuss the matter at its next meeting.
