Finn Valley’s Lecky equals Irish Junior record on way to indoor gold

Finn Valley AC’s Sommer Lecky keeps on rising and the 16-year-old won the high jump gold on day one of the Irish Life Health National Senior Indoor Championships today.

Lecky topped the pile after clearing 1.81 metres at the National Indoor Arena in Dublin.

Last year, Lecky won an outdoor gold (1.71m at Santry) and the Castlederg woman is regarded as a bright prospect for the future.

Her 1.81m today means that she has equalled the Irish Junior record – and she still has four years left at junior athletics.

Deirdre Ryan’s 1.93m national record will surely come into view soon for Lecky, who tonight will pick up the Performance of the Year award at the National Underage Awards in Tullamore.

Elsewhere today, Brendan Boyce of Letterkenny AC was second in the men’s 5k walk, with Alex Wright setting a new Irish record in winning in 18 minutes and 50.71 seconds.

Ann-Marie McGlynn from Letterkenny AC was fifth in the women’s 3k, while Geraldine Stewart from Tir Chonaill AC was fifth in the women’s shot put.

In the high jump, Lifford-Strabane AC’s Shannon Craig cleared 1.65m, but didn’t succeed at 1.70.

Action in Abbotstown resumes tomorrow.
