Mark English dashed for gold at the Irish Indoor Championships in Abbotstown this afternoon.

English took the 800m gold in 1 minute and 51.77 seconds.

English made his move at the bell and was able to stretch away from Zak Curran, who was tapping on the Letterkenny man’s shoulders as they approached the line.

English was to the point of barely appearing in an actual race as he came around the final bend, but had to go up a gear for his final few strides.

English won his sixth Irish Indoor title, adding this one to the golds from 2011, 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2018.

Curran took the silver in 1:51.91 with Conor Duncan third in 1:53.00.

English, the 2015 European indoor silver medallist and 2014 European bronze medallist, is currently the sixth fasted in Europe and will hope to reclaim a place on the continental podium this year.

In early March, English goes in the European Indoor Championships in Glasgow

A time of 1:46.94 to win the 800m at the Athlone International Grand Prix on Wednesday night was his fastest indoor time in four years.

Last weekend, the Letterkenny man won an 800m event in Ghent in 1:48.66 and yesterday, the UCD AC athlete breezed through his heat yesterday, leading the charge in 1:53.65.

Also today, Finn Valley AC’s Lauren Callaghan won bronze in the triple jump, reaching out to 11.43 metres.

Yesterday, Finn Valley’s Sommer Lecky won the women’s high jump, equalling her own Irish junior and U23 indoor records.

Brendan Boyce of Finn Valley won silver in the men’s 5k walk with Geraldine Stewart of Tir Chonaill AC winning bronze in the women’s shot put.
