SPORTS funding of €114,500 has been announced for Donegal.

The funding is part of a €7.3m funding from the Dormant Accounts Fund that the Minister is allocating to a range of sport and physical activity measures.

The announcement was made by Minister Catherine Martin TD, Minister for Media, Tourism, Arts, Culture, Sport and the Gaeltacht.

The investment aims to engage with communities across the county, focusing on people with disabilities, people who are educationally disadvantaged and from disadvantaged communities.

There is funding of €114,500 to Donegal-specific projects, plus a range of other funding that will also benefit organisations with a presence in Donegal such as the Ladies Gaelic Football Association (LGFA), Basketball Ireland, Irish Tug of War Association, the Irish Wheelchair Association Sport, Special Olympics Ireland, Mountaineering Ireland, and Rowing Ireland

Donegal-specific funding includes:

Community Sports and Physical Activity Hubs

€61,500 – RAY North West Donegal

€20,000 – Stranorlar, Killybegs, Ballyshannon

€10,000 Sports Inclusion Disability programme

€15,000 Volunteer training and support programme

€8,000 Youth Leadership

Michael White of the Green Party.

Donegal Green Party Chairman Michael White said: “This is a really positive announcement for people working in sports in the county, with a great mix of organisations getting funding.

“The aim of this money is to focus particularly on those working with young people, people with disabilities and in areas of disadvantage so I hope this gives a boost to all the recipients. Minister Martin is really seeking to promote inclusion and participation in sport from our whole community.”

Speaking about the new round of Dormant Account Funding, Minister for Media, Tourism, Arts, Culture, Sport and the Gaeltacht, Catherine Martin TD, said:  “A key priority for Government is the targeting of resources at programmes that seek to address inequalities in sports participation, in particular socio-economic disadvantage.

“Similarly, we are keen to ensure that interventions are in place to boost participation levels among people with disabilities. The range of measures funded through the Dormant Accounts Fund is helping to l make sport and physical activity more inclusive and accessible for many people right across Ireland.”
