Dundalk boss Kenny backs Finn Harps to avoid the drop

Dundalk manager Stephen Kenny has backed battling Finn Harps to survive in the Premier Division this season.

The Lilywhites defeated Harps 2-0 last night, thanks to David McMillan’s brace.

It was a much-improved Harps from last season, when Dundalk delivered a 7-0 drubbing in Ballybofey.

Although three teams will be relegated at the end of the 2017 season Kenny says Harps can stay out of the quicksand.

“They have improved,” Kenny said.

“There is no doubt that they have better players.

“I don’t think they’ll go down. They have a great spirit about them and I think they’ll win enough games.”

Kenny, who lives in Fahan, became the latest visiting boss to question the surface at Finn Park last night.

He said: “If the surface was better here, it would help them. It doesn’t do them any favours with it like that, particular with Paddy McCourt, Jonny Bonner, Caolan McAleer, Barry Molloy, all good footballers, it’s difficult to play on that surface.”

McMillan’s double gave Dundalk the three points and, with Cork City winning a record-equalling eighth game in a row since the start of the season, it means Dundalk stay on their coat-tails.

Kenny said: “I’m very pleased with the performance. It was a difficult pitch and a difficult opposition, but we were worthy winners. There was a real sense of a team and a collective effort. It’s an important win.

“Finn Harps put it up to us, but David showed his striker’s instincts for the goals.”
