Drawn tournament for Donegal boxers in Ennis

A DONEGAL BOXING team shared the spoils with a Clare Select on Saturday evening in Ennis with six wins apiece.Convoy’s former double Irish champion Bryan McNamee impressed with a second round stoppage of Jim McDonagh.

Here’s a roundup of the fights from Raymond Donaghy of St Bridget’s who was a part of the squad that made the long trip.

 

Boy 1 36kg Darragh Stack (Ennis) lost to Bernie McDonagh (Dunfanaghy) 0-3

Bernie started off very well, picking his man as he was coming to him with good, clean scoring shots. Bernie was in control from start to finish.

 

Youth 1 45kg  Michael F McDonagh (Ennis) beat Jack Greene (Carrigart) 3-0

Jack had a very close fight, at times during the fight wasn’t getting close enough to score, and was very unlucky to lose on a unanimouse

 

Boy 4 51kg   Michael Mongons (Ennis) lost to Ryan Ward-Mulrine (Convoy) 0-3

Ryan started very well, using his long, straight punches and movement giving Mongons a count in the last round. Ward-Mulrine won the fight 3/0

 

Boy 1 42kg   Colm Fitzpatrick (Ennis) lost to Liam Crawford (Raphoe) 0-3

Liam took control from the first round, holding the centre of the ring, picking his punches with great movement, holding the centre of the ring at all times.

 

Boy 3 78kg    John Sweeney (Ennis) beat Tom Doherty (Raphoe) 3-0

Very tough with two strong lads, Doherty getting good punches at time, Doherty was very unlucky not to get the decision.

 

Youth 2 66kg  Jim Mc Donagh (Ennis) lost to Bryan McNamee (Convoy) TKO 2

A very good fight, this, with McNamee getting caught in the first round bedfore settling into the fight with good skill and movement, picking his punches. McNamee won his fight by way of a second round stoppage

 

Boy 4 59kg    Martin McDonagh (Ennis) beat Hugh Doherty (St Bridgets) 2-1

Hugh had the better shot fighting the smaller man using his reach but got caught up times with the small man on the inside. Hugh was very unlucky to lose on a split decision.

 

Boy 3 53kg  Thomas McDonagh (Ennis) beat Pauric O’Donnell (Dungloe) 3-0

Pauric had a very hard fight, with a very good Mc Donagh from Ennis, unfortunately lost out on a 3/0

 

U18 70kg   Dermot O’Gormain (Ennis) beat Cathal Gallagher (Twin Towns) 2-1

Cathal started slow but came into it midway throught the first round. It was a good 2nd round with good punching and movement around the ring. Cathal finished the third round very good but lost out on a split decision 2/1

 

Youth 2 80 kg Johnny Ryan (Ennis) lost to Brian Elliott (Illies) 0-3

Brian started a bit slow but got into it within 30 seconds with the better punches. Elliott total control of the second from the start. Midway through round two, Elliott got caught with an unlucky count, but he returned that in the third stanza when Ryan received a count.

 

Intermediate 83kg   Ryan Dervan (Loughrea BC) beat Martin Lynch (Illies) 3-0

This was the fight of the night. Lynch took control from the first round with good body shots and good right hands over the top. Lynch gradually took total control and went on to win 3/0.

 

Youth 2 90kg  Marin John Mongons (Ennis) beat Edward McEleney (St Bridgets) 2-1

Cracking last fight with the first round very close but swayed the Ennis man’s way. McEleney started the second round well, with good straight, strong punching. Mongons came back strong in the last round with the two men going toe to toe. Young Mc leney was very unlucky to lose on a split decision.
