Drama at Todds Leap Ulster Rally as Donagh Kelly takes Tarmac Championship

DONAGH KELLY and his co-driver Kevin Flanagan won the Todds Leap Ulster Rally and Clonakilty Blackpudding Tarmac Championship title – but it wasn’t how they would’ve dreamed it.

The Garry Jennings and Letterkenny native Rory Kennedy’s Subaru Impreza had been making inroads all morning and it seemed they were on their way to a hat-trick of Ulster wins as they held a lead until almost in sight of the final finishing line, before their engine blew and went into flames.

Emergency services were called to the scene and both men were unhurt.

The stage was stopped, so even though second place would’ve been enough for Frosses native Kelly, he and Flanagan were declared the winners in their WRC Ford Focus, having finished the best part of two minutes in front of Desi Henry and Liam Moynihan in a Skoda.

Irish Tarmac and National Rally Championships this year.
