DOWNINGS CAME FROM eight points down to overcome Lios Póil in the semi-final of the Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta semi-finals in Ballyvourney this afternoon.

Na Dúnaibh 2-12 Lios Póil 2-10

Twenty minutes into the contest at  Páirc Íosagáin, Downings were 1-8 to 0-3 down and it seemed as though their interest in the competition – the junior section – they reached the final of last year was coming to an end.

However, by half-time the gap was only three, 1-9 to 1-6, with Lorcan Connor grabbing a goal before half-time.

By the 38th minute, Downings levelled it up against the Kerry side, with Gary McClafferty and Colin Gallagher in particular keeping the scoreboard ticking over.

Downings kept their foot on the gas and needed a late Jamie Lee McBride goal to seal their progression to tomorrow’s final, where they will take on Rinn Mhaoile from Galway at 2pm.

Last year, in the rearranged final that took place in Ardara in October after the original weekend was washed out, Downings went down to another Galway team, the Aran Islands.

Downings scorers: Lorcan Connor (1-1), Jamie Lee McBride (1-1), Gary McClafferty (0-5), Colin Gallagher (0-4), Shay Coyle (0-1).
