THE DONEGAL WOMEN’S League won the Gaynor Plate at the weekend in Limerick at the Under-16 Gaynor Cup finals.

Bríd McGinty’s team came home from silverware from their voyage to the University of Limerick after a dramatic penalty shoot-out win over Midlands.

Carla McManus’ goal had Midlands heading for the win when she drilled home, but late in the game Donegal leveled.

The equaliser was netted by Tyler Toland from a penalty and the Donegal girls held their nerve to win the shoot-out 5-4, with Niamh McDevitt netting the winning penalty.

In the semi-final, Donegal Women’s League also advanced on penalties.

Tyler Toland’s free-kick (below) had Donegal ahead but Angela McGuigan equalised to force penalties and they prevailed 3-2 in the nervous lottery.

Donegal had began their group phase with a 3-0 win over North Tipperary.

Toland, Amy Boyle-Carr and Fiona Shovlin scored the Donegal goals.

Danielle McDevitt put Donegal ahead against Galway, but Heather Payne and a Lilly Hengerer penalty gave Galway a 2-1 win.

Boyle-Carr netted the only goal of the game against Limerick Desmond and Julie Trearty was the match-winner in a 1-0 derby win over Inishowen in the final group game.
