THREE DONEGAL GIRLS played their part as the Republic of Ireland Under-17s defeated the Northern Ireland Under-19s this afternoon.

At the Ballymena Showgrounds, in a friendly arranged as part of the NI Super Cup, Dave Connell’s Republic of Ireland came out on top 4-3 on penalties following a 2-2 draw.

St Johnston’s Tyler Toland started the game for the Republic side, playing against a Northern Ireland outfit two years their senior.

Toland, who has been starring for Sion Swifts of late, began in the engine room for the girls in green.

Amy Boyle-Carr from Glenties was introduced as a substitute on the right-hand side of the Irish midfield at the break.

At that stage, Northern Ireland were one up, but Boyle-Carr provided the assist for Tiegan Ruddy of Peamount United to equalise.

Katie Burdis of Shelbourne put the Republic 2-1 ahead, only for Northern Ireland to draw level three minutes from time, but it was the Republic who had the edge when it went to the shoot-out.

During the second half, Donegal Town FC youngster Danielle McDevitt – who plays in the Donegal Women’s League with Lagan Harps – came on as a replacement for Toland.
