Donegal sweat on McMenamin fitness ahead of Ulster final

STEPHEN McMenamin is Donegal’s biggest injury concern ahead of Sunday’s Ulster final against Cavan.

McMenamin had to limp out of the semi-final win over Armagh after just five minutes on Saturday.

The Red Hughs man pulled up in the opening exchanges and was in some distress before being withdrawn.

“It doesn’t look too good for him,” Donegal manager Declan Bonner conceded afterwards.

“It will be difficult to see him being ready for next week. That would be a big, big blow for us. It looks like he did his hamstring.

“We have picked up some injuries. I’m not sure of the extent of those yet. We have a short turnaround and that’s a worrying going into an Ulster final.”

Donegal take on Cavan at the Athletic Grounds on Sunday (4pm) in what is the county’s ninth final appearance in ten years.

With Odhrán McFadden-Ferry unavailable due to his deployment to the Lebanon with the Irish Defence Forces and Conor Morrison on the long-term injury list, Donegal’s depth will be tested.

Hugh McFadden, Eoin McHugh and Paul Brennan were also taken off during the game

The eight-day turnaround means that time is short.

Bonner said: “It is difficult, but we’re just delighted to be playing football. It’s difficult for players who have picked up knocks.

“It was a physical game out there. It was a good, honest game of football and both teams went at it. The turnaround is short and we’ll get ready. The strength of the squad will be tested.”

Patrick McBrearty made a first Championship appearance of 2020 on Saturday, the Kilcar ace scoring a point with his first touch.

McBrearty, who has missed the last few weeks due to a quad injury, seemed to have a real purpose when he came into the action.

Bonner said: “We needed to get him game time. It was great to get him in and he got on the scoreboard very quickly when he came in. He looked sharp. That’s important for us.”
