Donegal quartet set for Portugal trip with Irish senior team

A Donegal quartet joins up with the Republic of Ireland Women’s National Team next week for a friendly double header in Portugal.

Roma McLaughlin, Tyler Toland, Amber Barrett and Amy Boyle-Carr head to Portugal for the games with Colin Bell’s squad.

Ireland, who have enjoyed a good start to their World Cup qualifying campaign, have games against Portugal on January 18 and 21st, both at the Estadio San Miguel in Ponta Delgada.

For Glenties woman Boyle-Carr, it is a first ever senior call up. Boyle-Carr has played for the Irish Under-17s and now the Sion Swifts player there is a chance to impress Bell, also the U17 boss, at senior level.

Toland, a St Johnston native who plays for Maiden City, rose to prominence in the latter half of 2017 when, at just 16 years of age, she made her senior bow in a win over Northern Ireland. Having appeared as a substitute that evening in Lurgan, Toland started the games against Slovakia and the Netherlands.

Milford native Barrett, a player with Peamount United, had a similar tale with her senior debut also coming against Northern Ireland.

Of the four, McLaughlin, in spite of her own young years, is the most seasoned senior international. The Greencastle woman and Shelbourne midfielder will be aiming to get back into contention for a berth in the starting XI in Portugal.
