DONEGAL man Donal Ward was presented with the Lord Mayor’s Medal at the start of yesterday’s Dublin Marathon.

Ward, who hails from Glenties, has now competed in and completed all 40 Dublin Marathons, since the first in 1980.

He is one of 13 people to have the full compliment and, as the race got ready to celebrate its ruby anniversary yesterday, Ward and the others were honoured by the Dublin Lord Mayor, Paul McAuliffe.

“Completing a single marathon is a momentous achievement but completing 39 with the aim of a 40th in sight is a remarkable testament to human will, determination and a true love of running,” Mr McAuliffe said.

“The Lord Mayor’s Medal is about honouring individuals who have shown true resilience.”

65-year-old Ward now lives in the Finn Valley area and trains at times at Finn Valley AC. He begins his training ‘regime’ each September and Dublin is his annual target.

Ward was the first home in the M65 category yesterday.
