Donegal League to host ’17-minute match’ on Sunday

THE DONEGAL JUNIOR LEAGUE will stage a ’17-minute match’ this Sunday.

The Athletic Grounds in Lifford is pencilled in to host the CT Ball Division 2 meeting of Deele Harps and Ballybofey United – a fixture that will last only 17 minutes.

It comes after their initial meeting on Valentine’s Day was abandoned in the 73rd minute.

Referee Barry Hunter abandoned the fixture after spectators encroached onto the field of play.

It hadn’t been an ill-tempered game with only one yellow card handed out in the 73 minutes.

Donegal League disciplinary chiefs investigated and ruled that the final 17 minutes be played.

At the time of the abandonment, Deele were leading 1-0 through player-manager Shane Gallagher’s goal.

On Sunday, Hunter will again referee and Deele will begin a goal up, but the League has not ruled that the same eleven players begin this weekend as finished the previous day.

The game is crucial in the title race and promotion push. Deele are just two points behind League leaders Erne Wanderers and have a game less to their name.

Should they hold onto the lead they’ll begin with, Deele will go top of the table.
