Donegal joy in Salou as Ireland win Bob Docherty Cup

There was a strong Donegal feel today as the Republic of Ireland U15 schools team retained the Bob Docherty Cup in Salou.

Scoil Mhuire, Buncrana student Emma Doherty and Carndonagh Community School’s Ellie Long were in the Irish side that came from one-nil down to defeat Gibraltar 4-1 at Cambrils Park.

Following earlier wins over Scotland and England, it meant the Girls in Green won the Bob Docherty Cup.

Doherty went close for Ireland, but it was Gibraltar who led 1-0 at half-time.

Áine Walsh (Salesian Secondary College, Pallaskenry) made a positive impact when introduced at half time as she converted ten minutes into the restart.

Walsh was in explosive fashion as she scored sixty seconds later through some fancy footwork from Palmerstown pupil Jess Stapleton to play her in, making it 2-1 on 41 minutes.

Presentation SS, Kilkenny student Ellen Molloy cut down the left channel to slot home Ireland’s third six minutes later from the six yard box.

School mate Freya DeMange, also a second half sub, sliced the ball over the head of the Gibraltar keeper to make it 4-1 with seven minutes remaining.

Yesterday, Ireland won the John Read Cup when they defeated England on penalties, 5-3, after a 1-1 draw.

On Monday, Doherty netted one of the goals, a cracker, in the opening 2-0 win over Scotland.

Doherty and Long were joined by fellow Inishowen woman Karen Henry, a teacher at Mulroy College in Milford, who is on the books at Bonagee United.
