Donegal captain Michael Murphy came out fighting after Sunday’s loss to Kerry, insisting: ‘’We will still be competitive’.

A young Donegal side, including four debutants from the start and another two off the bench, went down 2-17 to 1-17 on a day when the Kingdom were far superior.

Murphy’s penalty in the first half was cancelled out by Paul Geaney’s goal and another three-pointer by Geaney set Kerry on their way.

With eight of Donegal’s 2016 panel gone from the scene, Donegal are building the blocks again – and Murphy believes that his men will still challenge≥

“It was a steep learning curve, but this is what we’re in for and we knew we were in for,” Murphy, pictured above by Geraldine Diver, said.

“We thought that things were building really, really well through the last three to four months and training has gone well. Training and big games in Division 1 are completely different.

“Any mistakes we made it was goals or it was scores. I’m still very, very hungry for this, as I know this whole bunch is.

“There is a hunger within this squad. We’re here to be competitive, make no bones about that, and things are very, very positive.

Rory Gallagher’s team now go to Dr Hyde Park to face Roscommon on Sunday. Murphy said: “We’ll look for a reaction next week and that’s what’s good about the League – it gives you that chance.”
