Donegal camp hit by virus as key players forced to sit out Monaghan defeat

A virus that rocked the Donegal camp left Declan Bonner down four senior players for this afternoon’s Allianz League clash against Monaghan.

Donegal were already minus the injured Patrick McBrearty – whose knee injury means his League campaign is over for 2018 – when a virus took hold late in the week.

Ryan McHugh, Mark McHugh, Martin McElhinney and Odhrán Mac Niallais watched from the stand in St Tiernach’s Park after being hit by the bug.

“There is a virus within the camp and they were ruled out,” Bonner said after his team lost 1-16 to 1-10.

“Something similar happened before the Dublin match. We’re not getting the rubs at the minute.”

Paddy McGrath managed to play 70 minutes on his first appearance of the year after a knee injury picked up in 2017 had the Ardara man sidelined.

Frank McGlynn also played the bulk of the game, while Bonner hopes to welcome Paul Brennan back for next week’s crunch showdown with Mayo in Ballybofey.

McBrearty, though, will not feature for Donegal until the May 13 Championship clash with Cavan.

Bonner said: “It’s not going to keep him out long term.

“The goal now is around the 13th of May for the Championship.

“We’d have expected him to kick a number of scores if he had been out there today. We’re delighted that there is no serious damage done and he’ll be back for the Championship.”
