Donegal boxers impressed in two tournaments in Canada, as part of an Oakleaf ABC Select, over the weekend.
Three of Oakleaf’s Donegal punchers – Brett McGinty, Callum Toland and Sean Devenney – were accompanied on the trip by Raphoe ABC’s Brendan O’Hagan and Convoy ABC’s Bryan McNamee.
On Friday night at Niagra Falls, the Oakleaf ABC beat a St Catharine’s ABC select 5-2.
Ballybofey boxer Devenney overcame Tarza Crawford of Rochester in an 80-pounder, while O’Hagan overcame Ivory Loving, also of Rochester, in a 99-pound contest.
McNamee got the better of Jake Isenor from St Catharine’s, but Toland was edged out by Stephen Ryan of the same club.
The bout between Toland and Ryan was named as the fight of the night.
McGinty starred on Friday night as he soared to an excellent win over Daniel Payne of Battle Arts at 170 pounds.
McGinty left with the Boxer of the Night award.
On Sunday evening, the boxers took part in the Bangar in the Hangar, hosted by Bluewater Boxing Club.
This time, Oakleaf drew 3-3 with the Canadians.
Devenney was among the winners this time, while O’Hagan was beaten on a wafer thin decision.
Toland’s scheduled opponent pulled out through an injury while McGinty and McNamee wowed the 750-strong crowd in an exhibition bout.
Ballybofey duo Eunan Devenney and Eamon McAuley and St Johnston’s Dessie McGinty were among the traveling party with the fames Oakleaf club, led by Eugene O’Kane senior and Oakleaf ABC head coach Eugene O’Kane junior.
The Brandywell-based club celebrated its 25th anniversary last year and is a leading light of the sweet science.
