SEVERAL BOXERS from Donegal – including reigning European bronze medallist Leah Gallen – are awaiting anxiously the draws for the National Men’s and Women’s Under-18 Championships.

Over 100 boxers have entered the Championships with the draw set to be made today in Dublin.

The IABA are using the tournament to assist with their selection process for the European Men’s and Women’s Youth Championships in Budva, Montenegro in April.

Raphoe welter Gallen, a two-time European bronze medalist, faces competition from the likes of Dominika Gulli (Bracken) and Shelby Myers (Crumlin) in the 69kgs category.

Last September, Gallen won a European Youth bronze in Bulgaria having won a European Junior bronze the previous year.

Gallen’s Raphoe ABC colleague Cody Lafferty, a former Irish champ, goes at 48kgs, while Raphoe welter Liam McMonagle is also looking to make a mark.

Letterkenny ABC’s diminutive Paddy McShane – a four-time Irish champion – has entered at 49kgs, with Illies Golden Gloms man Cahir Gormley at 60kgs.

The entry list also includes Letterkenny teen Joe Harkin, who punches for Oakleaf ABC.
