Gairmscoil Chú Uladh students make GAA’s 1916 Commemoration CD

THE TRANSITION YEAR students from Gairmscoil Chú Uladh, Ballinamore, Fintown’s song “Nothing Beats Being There” has been chosen to be included on the GAA’s 1916 Commemoration CD.

The students also composed two other compositions, “The Rising Crisis” and “Padraig Pearse in the GPO” which were highly commended in the competition.

In all, there were almost 70 songs submitted from 47 schools for a competition which was an initiative by the GAA’s Coiste Scór Náisiúnta. All songs were asked to use the theme of 1916 as their inspiration.

Indeed, such was the high calibre of those entries that a decision has been made to make a CD of the top 10 songs and to include it in the publication of a book that lists the lyrics of all songs entered.

3 Island – Saoirse, Naoise & Ciara Carty, Our Lady of Lourdes Secondary School, Rosbercon, Co. Kilkenny.

4 Aisling – Lee O’Reilly and Cormac Mac Aodhagáin, Confey College, Co. Kildare.

5 Nothing Beats being There – Transition Year Students, Gairmscoil Chú Uladh, Béal an Átha Móir, Co. Dhún na nGall

6 Ag Lorg Saoirse – Daltaí Bliain 4, Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne, Co. Chiarraí

7 The Cherished Children of 1916 – Michaela Keenaghan, Banagher College, Banagher, Co. Offaly.

8 No title – composer Orla Gardner, Thomastown, Co. Kilkenny

9 Éireann go Brách – Eimear Mag Aoidh, St. Mark’s Secondary School, Warrenpoint, Co. Down.

10 Rise Up – St. Jarlath’s College, Tuam, Co. Galway.
