Donagh Kelly gets Championship bid off to winning start in Mayo

DONAGH Kelly won the Mayo Stages Rally today, getting his Triton Showers National Rally Championship bid off to a perfect start.

The Frosses man, with Conor Foley again on the notes, had 30.8 seconds to spare in the end up.

The nine stages had a titanic battle between Kelly, Josh Moffett and Roy White.

Moffett had trouble with the fuel pressure in the Hyundai on stage eight and didn’t take to the start line of stage nine.

Moffett’s withdrawal left Kelly, in a VW Polo GTi R5, with a comfortable advantage for the final stage.

“It was a good race,” Kelly said afterwards.

“It was good to swap times with Josh and Roy. We showed that we can still put in a performance. I really do take it rally-by-rally.”

Next on the list for Kelly will be the West Cork Rally.

Donegal duo Daniel Connaghan and Terence McGee, while Donegal’s Liam McIntyre navigated for Niall Devine, who finished eighth.
