CONOR DOHERTY was the hat-trick hero last night in Gleneely as Moville Celtic moved into the Charlie O’Donnell Cup semi-finals.

Moville Celtic 3 Greencastle FC 2

Moville took the lead in the 20th minute. Pauric Doherty, the Greencastle keeper, saw a poor kick-out picked up by Fionn McLaughlin and his through ball found Conor Doherty, who slotted home to the bottom corner.

That came just after a similar passage of play saw Doherty flash a shot just wide of the far post.

It was 2-0 on 35 minutes. After Jack Keys did well with an overlapping surge down the right to win a corner, Moville took it quick and, with Greencastle slow to reach, Doherty fired home his second.

Just before halftime, Greencastle fashioned a decent opening, but Michael Barr shot over from 22 yards.

Two minutes into the second half, Doherty was wheeling away celebrating his hat-trick as he tapped home at the back post from Michael McNutt’s cross.

Doherty and Moville were denied a fourth as he saw a penalty brilliantly saved by Pauric Doherty in the 51st minute.

Greencastle oulled one back, however, as Barr finished after Christy Hegarty’s free kick put him in on goal.

McNutt went close at one end before, at the other, Ronan Doherty’s shot was well blocked by Ryan Coyle.

Greencastle then saw a good spell of pressure rewarded with a second goal as Barr hammered home in a scramble and it was very much game on.

There were chances at either end, but Moville just held on.
