Donegal GAA Development Officer David McLoone says the completion of the Donegal GAA Training Centre in Convoy ‘requires a very substantial investment’.
In August, construction of the building at the Training Centre began and it is expected that it will be opened by next summer.
The latest phase of the development also includes a 200-seater stand overlooking one of the pitches, a fence to enclose that pitch and additional lighting for around the building and the carpark.
This phase is to cost €2.17 million. €875,000 has been pledged from Croke Park while Donegal GAA were allocated €300,000 from the Sports Capital funding.
The remaining €995,000 will have to be funded by Donegal GAA.
“The project requires a very substantial investment by CLG Dhun na nGall, particularly during 2018 and 2019,” McLoone told Thursday night’s convention in Donegal Town.
“We are delighted to get the project started after a few attempts. It took a very big push.
“The funding of the project is a challenge. We spent a lot time getting a finance plan together for the Training Centre.
“We are on track to deliver. The initiatives we have will need support.
“The project is going well and hopefully we will be cutting the ribbon next summer.”
The two-storey building will comprise: Ground floor – seven team dressing rooms, one referee changing room, one caretaker room, physio/medical room, public toilets, plant room/switch room/stores; First floor – Gym, multipurpose hall, administration area, office, meeting/training/video analysis room, kitchenette and toilets.
Funding has been approved by Donegal County Council under the Development Fund Initiative, while the remainder will be funded through borrowing over a 10-15 year period.
The County Board has also applied for further Sports Capital funding.
