Declan Devine tips Ronan Boyce for ‘brilliant future’ at Derry City

DERRY City manager Declan Devine has hailed Donegal teen Ronan Boyce, who bagged his first senior goal last night.

Boyce’s superb headed goal helped earn Derry their first point of the season in a 1-1 draw with Drogheda United at the Brandywell.

Ramelton native Boyce made his first senior start in Tuesday’s defeat to Shamrock Rovers and was retained for the visit of Drogheda to Foyleside.

Boyce repaid Devine’s faith and the Derry boss was purring about the youngster.

“He has been the best player since we came back in pre-season,” Devine said.

“He has waited for his chance. It’s unorthodox for him to play at right-back. He normally plays at centre-back for the under-19s.

“His attitude and application at training every day is second to none. The young lad has a brilliant future in the game. he continues to show character at such a young age… his drive, determination and his bravery to get on the ball.”

Boyce is a son of former Swilly Rovers player Marty Boyce and Devine is excited for the future of the 18-year-old.

He said: “There aren’t a lot of centre-backs who can take the ball and play in the wide areas of the pitch. He looks so comfortable there.

“Ronan deserves huge credit. It’s very difficult for a young lad like him to be so expressive. We’re delighted for him. He has put so much into his game.”
