Curtis and Pompey are play-off bound as clubs vote to curtail League One season

RONAN Curtis and Portsmouth will compete in the Sky Bet League One play-offs after clubs voted yesterday to curtail the 2019/20 season.

The decisions sees Portsmouth finish fifth in the unweighted points-per-game system, while Stephen McLaughlin and Southend have been relegated to League Two.

Curtis had been in flying form during the season and the St Johnston man will hope to recapture that form when action resumes.

No dates have yet been announced for the play-offs with Kenny Jackett’s Portsmouth set to take on Oxford over two legs in a semi-final.

The play-offs will be played behind closed doors and will be shown live by Sky Sports.

League One clubs yesterday voted by an overwhelming majority to formally end the 2019/20 season.

As a result, the final league standings meant that Coventry City were crowned as the League One champions with Rotherham United also securing automatic promotion to the Championship.

Portsmouth will join Wycombe Wanderers, Oxford United and Fleetwood Town in the Sky Bet Play-offs.

The schedule of play-off games will, League officials say, be announced in due course.

Curtis spent some time at home in Donegal during lockdown but recently returned to England to resume training with Pompey.

There was disappointment for Isle of Doagh native McLaughlin and Southend who will drop to League Two. Only Bolton Wanderers were beneath Southend, who were 16 points from 20th placed AFC Wimbledon at the time the curtain fell.

The Shrimpers had won only four games out of 35 and they are joined by Bolton and Tranmere in falling through the trapdoor to League Two.
