County Board to headhunt hurling boss as candidates not deemed suitable

The Donegal County Board have formed a sub committee to headhunt a new senior hurling manager – after none of the nominated candidates were deemed suitable.

Donegal have been on the look-out for a manager since Ardal McDermott (pictured by Geraldine Diver) stepped down at the July meeting of the county committee.

At last night’s specially arranged county committee meeting, Donegal Chairman Sean Dunnion confirmed that the Board were having to go down the route of headhunting a successor.

“A number of people had applied or were nominated, but the selection has concluded that no candidates presented themselves through the process that could be put forward for ratifying,” he explained to delegates.

“The management structure and team needs to be identified, approached and recruited.”

Dunnion will lead a five-man selection committee that also includes County Treasurer Cieran Kelly, Jason Ewing, Gary Duffy and Michael McGeehin.

It is believed that former manager Ray Durack’s name had been in the mix before he is said to have withdrawn from the process.

McDermott took over from Durack in late 2015.

McDermott had a two-year term with the option of a third year, but he had chose not to seek the additional year.

In 2016, Donegal were relegated from Division 2B, but reached a Nicky Rackard Cup semi-final where they were beaten by Mayo.

This year, Donegal were crowned Division 3A winners and return to Division 2B for 2018. After losses to Tyrone and Monaghan, they made their exit from the Nicky Rackard Cup.
