Competitive athletics challenge founded in Donegal goes national

A UNIQUE athletics challenge concepted by a Castlefin man is now being rolled out nationwide.

Athletics Ireland this week announced a six-week in-house club league to start this Sunday, February 14.

The idea was first mooted by Dermot McGranaghan, a regional development officer with Athletics Ireland.

Over 500 children from Donegal, Cavan, Monaghan, Sligo and Leitrim took part before Christmas and now the national body have adopted the idea.

“It was great to give the clubs and especially the young kids some sort of challenge in the way of competition throughout the lockdown,” the Finn Valley AC clubman said.

“It has been a difficult and challenging year for athletes with national championships being called off. The challenge was something to keep the athletes active and competitive.”

Former Irish Olympic Team Manager Patsy McGonagle welcomed the news. He said: “This is something to get us beyond the level 5 restrictions and it’s very exciting for young athletes.

“With clubs having to submit results, it adds a competitive element that athletes have been missing recently. This virtual challenge has to be the last push to get us beyond Covid restrictions and back into more normal competition, but it’s great that out athletes now have this as an outlet.”

The process for the new in-house club league is detailed below

1 – Each club selects mixed teams

Clubs select teams of mixed age groups, gender and ability,

so if your club has 100 athletes select 10 teams of 10.

2 – Assign club coaches to mentor each team

Mentors to collect results from their own teams and send

to designated person in club to compile results table.

3 – Record your results over six weeks

Record the results on an excel file and submit to the
club pro to post on the clubs social Media pages.

4 – Ready, Steady, Go!

Record the results on an excel file and submit to the

club pro to post on the clubs social Media pages.

The Challenge starts week commencing 14th February
