Comfortable win in League opener for LyIT against UUC

LETTERKENNY INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY had little trouble in getting the better of University of Ulster, Coleraine in their opening independent.ie Senior League Division 2 Group A clash at O’Donnell Park.

Letterkenny Institute of Technology 3-12 University of Ulster, Coleraine 0-07

Goals in the first half by Daire McDaid, Callum Gallagher and Ultan Larney had the game over as a challenge by the time Michael Mulhern signalled for half-time.

LyIT led by 13 points (3-6 to 0-2) at the changeover and could ease their feet from the gas in the second half on a routine day at the office.

Both teams lined out in white and while it was difficult for spectators to separate the sides there was no doubting the victors.

Niall Harley and Gerard Gorman swapped points before the Port Road students assumed total control and a booming effort by Niall Brady was all that would trouble the score keepers by the visitors for the remainder of the opening half.

Gallagher and McDaid popped over frees and McDaid slid over under pressure from Aaron Daly to open up a three-point lead.

Eamon O’Boyle’s team netted their first goal when McDaid emphatically drilled past Mark O’Reilly.

Soon after, McDaid turned provider. O’Reilly looked to have dealt with the Termon man’s teasing ball into the edge of the square, but the alert Gallagher stole in, took possession and slotted to the net.

John Campbell continued the procession before a third goal arrived, this one courtesy of Larney, with the County Louth man making no mistake with a crisp finish.

On the blow of the half-time whistle, Larney pointed and LyIT led 3-6 to 0-2 at half-time.

Gallagher, Joe Perry and Hugh Boyle stretched the margin further before UUC had a period of brief respite, given to them through frees by Niall Brady (3) and Daniel Cassidy.

Three more by Gallagher had LyIt 14 in front at the conclusion of a useful first day out, with Willie Gillespie – who is set to line out for Naomh Colmcille in Sunday-week’s Donegal IFC final against Bundoran – kept to a watching brief this afternoon.
