Coleman on the mark as Everton go second in the Premier League

SÉAMUS COLEMAN SCORED his first goal of the season as Everton defeated Middlesbrough to move into second spot in the Barclay’s Premier League.

The Killybegs man scored Everton’s second goal in a 3-1 win over Boro at Goodison Park that confirmed the Toffees’ best start to a campaign since the 1978/79 season.

Ronald Koeman’s team fell behind when Alvaro Negredo’s over-the-top challenge forced Everton goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg to concede an own goal on 21 minutes.

Everton drew level through Gareth Barry, on the occasion of his 600th Premier League appearance, three minutes later.

And in the 42nd minute Coleman fired home, exchanging passes with Romelu Lukaku and getting by Daniel Ayala before slotting past Victor Valdes with his left foot from 18 yards.

Just before half-time, Lukaku added a third as Everton scored another impressive win.

“Winning games breeds confidence and going into the next one we will feel we can win that,” Coleman said.

“We’re not looking to the end of the season and where we can finish.

“I know it’s a boring answer but we’re just looking to the next game and go into the international break with two more wins.

“Ronald Koeman expects people to work hard, he expects his forwards to work hard, and he demands respect from everyone and that is what you want from your boss.”
