Cloughaneely got their 2016 league campaign underway as they travelled to Moyle Park to face Divsion 2 newcomers Milford.

The perfectly mild playing conditions made the setting for a game which went down to the wire. Milford were first out of the blocks and registered 2 points within quick succession, before Cloughaneely’s Shaun McGarvey was awarded a free to put Cloughaneely’s 1st point on the board. Despite Cloughaneely being a number of men short due to soccer commitments; they really started to pull away 10 mins into the game; and had a 0-09 to 0-03 lead heading into the dying minutes of the 1st half. However the resilient Milford, faced the challenge head on and were rewarded for their efforts with a well worked goal, seconds before the half time whistle; leaving the half time score 1-03|0-09.

The narrowing of the margin just before half time made for a neck and neck second half encounter. Again, Milford were first out of the blocks in part 2 with a couple of quick points to bring them within reach of the visiting side. Cloughaneely were held scoreless in the 2nd half until the final 10 mins when Shaun McGarvey, Cillian Gallagher and Shaun McGuire managed to add to Cloughaneely’s tally to keep them 2 points ahead of the home team in the dying seconds of the game. With Milford realising the clock was counting down they found themselves a goal chance, however the crossbar denied them a final second steal!. Final Score Milford 1-08, CCF 0-13

Next Up: Cloughaneely have a home game in round 2 against MacCumhaills, on Easter Monday at 1:30 and 3:00 pm.

Note: The pitch is still unavailable for training this week. It will be available for competitive games only.

U-6/8/10’s: Indoor training is taking a break for the Easter Holidays; will resume again when schools re-open!

U-12 boys: There will be no training for the U-12’s during the Easter break- they are back on the 4th.

Hard luck to our minors who were beaten by a strong Gweedore side in Magheragallon on Monday evening 4-12|2-09. The lads put in a big effort with Noel Sweeney, Jason McGee, Michael Fitzgerald and Denis Coll showing particularly well for Cloughaneely! They are now fixed to play St Michael’s at home on Easter Sunday at 12:00 pm (this fixture is subject to change so keep on eye out on facebook and twitter for any changes!)
