IT WAS AN end to end battle as the intermediate championship got underway in Páirc Naomh Fhionán on Saturday evening as Aodh Ruadh defeated Cloughaneely.

Cloughaneely 2-11 Aodh Ruadh 4-8

Aodh Ruadh came out as eventual winners in what was a highly entertaining game which could have gone either way.

It was a lightening start to the game as Cloughaneely were immediately out of the starting blocks with Ciaran McFadden knocking over Cloughaneely’s first point straight from throw in.

Aodh Ruadh, quick on their response, had the ball worked back down the pitch finding Seamus Kane who beat Cloughaneely keeper to register a goal for Aodh Ruadh. Cloughaneely managed to edge ahead in the 10th minute when Paul Sweeney blasted home a goal for the home side.

The game progressed on a tit for tat basis leaving the spectators on edge throughout. In the 20th minute Cloughaneely’s defence found themselves in bother again when the duo of Philip Patton and Eamonn McGrath worked well together to allow McGrath to register Aodh Ruadh’s second goal.

Cloughaneely’s Darren Ferry, John McGarvey and Martin McGuire notched over points to narrow the margin leading up to half time; however Aodh Ruadh’s Daithí MacCorráin blasted home their third goal leaving three points in it at half time, as the visitors were 3-5 to 1-8 in front.

It was all to play for at the start of the second half and it was again Cloughaneely’s young Ciaran McFadden who stepped up to the mark with an excellent finish to register Cloughaneely’s second goal, leaving the score all square.

Martin McGuire then managed to put the home side ahead by 1 point. Cloughaneely will be disappointed to have given away a penalty in the 42nd minute which Aodh Ruadh’s Diarmaid McInerney easily put away.

Further Cloughaneely points from Darren McGeever and John McGarvey were not enough to get CLoughaneely over the line as Aodh Ruadh’s David Dolan and Diarmaid McInerney added the extra insurance points to the score board in the dying minutes.
