How Ciaran Gallagher entered the Finn Harps history books last night

Goalkeeper Ciaran Gallagher set a new Finn Harps club record of consecutive clean sheets last night.

The Raphoe man (pictured by Joe Boland, North West News Pix) kept his sixth shutout in a row as Harps overcame Wexford Youths.

It is now 559 minutes of football since Gallagher conceded. The last man to score past him was Tooban native Georgie Kelly in UCD’s 3-1 win in Ballybofey on June 15.

Since then, during a spell that has seen Harps claim 16 points from a possible 18, Gallagher has  kept the sheet clean against Cabinteely, Drogheda, Longford, Shelbourne, Cobh and Wexford.

Gallagher has kept 12 clean sheets in total so far in the 2018 campaign.

His run beats the previous best, set by James Gallagher in 2004. That season, Gallagher kept a clean sheet in each of Harps’ final five games on their way to winning the First Division.

The sequence included a 2-0 win over Bray, a 0-0 draw against Monaghan, a 6-0 success against Athlone, a 2-0 victory over Kildare and the final night’s famous 3-0 win at home to Dundalk that confirmed Harps as First Division champions.

Last night, though, Gallagher etched himself into Harps history.

“We ran it tight at the end,” Harps manager Ollie Horgan reflected.

“Ciaran touched one over.

“They deserve a bit of credit. We were playing better attacking wise, but we were wide open and conceded four against Longford and three against UCD. We have managed to turn that a little, but we need to keep it going.”
