CIARA Grant has relocated back to Letterkenny to aid in the Covid-19 emergency.
A recently-qualified doctor, Grant had been living in Dublin and has signed for Women’s National League side Shelbourne.
However, Grant – who has been capped 12 times by the Republic of Ireland Women’s National Team – volunteered to come back to Letterkenny University Hospital following the outbreak of Covid-19.
“There are doctors, nurses, cleaners, lots of different people, all putting ourselves at higher risk of contamination by working in populated areas in the hospital, as well as those working in nursing homes and hospices,” said Grant.
“These are very difficult situations with people self-isolated and people sacrificing a lot.
“I wanted to do what I could even though I’m not on the COVID-19 ward, there is still a lot to do.
“Some people are almost afraid to come near the hospital if they have anything wrong with them but we are here to help.”
Having played with Sion Swifts last season, Grant attracted attention from clubs locally and nationally before signing for Shels. And Grant had been eyeing up a big season with the Reds, having just settled into life at the Drumcondra club.
Now, though, football is far removed from the thoughts as she helps in a crisis that has engulfed the globe.
She said: “There is fantastic work being done by people all around the country to battle this virus. I just want to help out as best as I can.”
