Christmas cheer for Ballybofey United’s pitch plans

BALLYBOFEY UNITED FOOTBALL CLUB has been given the Christmas present it has craved for so long.

Gary Foy, the club secretary, has confirmed that the club’s purchase of a 3.4 acre site at Dreenan, Ballybofey, has been completed and development work on a new pitch can commence from next month.

The club’s solicitors this morning received the final piece of paperwork on the land purchase, which will enable the club to begin its development in January.

“We were waiting on this last piece of documentation and we’re very thankful to the Butt Hall Committee for getting that done for us,” Foy told Donegal Sport Hub.

“We can start work now on our new pitch. It’s great news for the club.

“A lot of people have played a big part in this, from the fund-raising to the administration and the hours of effort is now worthwhile.

“This is the first step, but we want now to work together to build Ballybofey United into a club befitting of the area.”

Late in 2013 the club was forced by a High Court ruling to vacate Finn View Park, the pitch the club had played on since 1971, to make way for the Aldi supermarket.

A protracted legal battle ensued and a series of public meetings were held before the club decided to proceed with the purchase of the land, adjacent to the Butt Hall Tennis Club at Dreenan.
