RAPHOE’S CHLOE MAGEE has learned her opponents for the Olympic Games after the draw was conducted this afternoon.

The draw was held at Riocentro – Pavilion 4 in Barra, the venue for Olympic badminton which starts on 11 August.

Magee, who jets out to Rio late next week for what will be her third Olympics, has been handed one of the toughest possible tests.

Magee has been paired with top Chinese player Wang Yihan, the world number 2, who is the second seed for the women’s singles in Rio, and German Karin Schnaase.

Yihan is a former world champions, who was the silver medallist in London 2012, when she lost to Li Xuerui 21-15 21-23 21-17 in the final.

Yihan won the Badminton World Cup in 2006 when she was just 18 and she won the World Championships in 2011. She has claimed the Asian Championship title in 2011, 2013 and 2016.

Schnaase was a regular opponent of Magee’s in the German League, although they haven’t squared up in a while now.

Schnaase, the world number 28, won a gold at the European Team Championships in 2012.

Magee will become the first Donegal athlete to compete at three Olympic Games next month.

In Beijing in 2008, the Raphoe pocket rocket defeated Kati Tolmoff 18-21 21-18 21-19 before bowing out to then world number 11 Jun Jae-youn.

Four years ago in London, Magee overcame Hadia Hosny before losing out against Hongyan Pi.
