Ronan Curtis was delighted to be back among the goals for Portsmouth last night.
The St Johnston man netted Pompey’s second goal in a 2-0 win over Walsall at Fratton Park – a result that keeps them top of League One.
A run of six goals in his first 11 games resulted in a Republic of Ireland senior debut with the attacker featuring in the recent friendly against Northern Ireland and the Nations League clash in Denmark.
Last night, Curtis bagged his first in eight games.
“It was a bit of a relief 100 per cent because we all know how your confidence can go up and down,” Curtis said.
“But I was glad to get back on the scoresheet and hopefully can continue it.
“I want to be producing for the team and setting up as many goals as I can. It’s a team game and I’m here for the team – it’s not all about me all of the time.”
Oli Hawkins opened the scoring for Portsmouth and, four minutes after half-time, Curtis hit the second.
The 22-year-old said: “It was a comfortable enough win in the end.
“We knew they were a good side. They’ve got good wingers and a good striker up top.
“We knew what we needed to do. In training, we worked on getting into the box, arriving at that right time. I arrived in the box at the right time and I managed to get the goal.”
Portsmouth are four points clear of second-placed Sunderland.
Curtis said: “We’ve all got a good relationship and we’re all getting goals. It’s taken a bit of time, but everyone is gelling.
“There’s a great chemistry around the training ground and that’s the reason why we’re top of the league.
“The confidence is flowing and you’re not going to lose that if you keep winning games. Hopefully we can keep it going.”
