Packie Bonner says Celtic fans will feel ‘let down’ by the timing of Brendan Rodgers’ exit from Parkhead.
Rodgers was yesterday confirmed as the new manager of Premier League side Leicester City, with Neil Lennon returning to Celtic as Rodgers’ replacement.
Rodgers took over at Celtic in May 2016 and led the Hoops to League, Scottish Cup and League Cup success in his first two seasons and was on course for a third this season, with Celtic on the cup of an eighth League title in a row.
Rodgers, though, has left Glasgow to join Leicester and Bonner – who made 642 Celtic appearances – isn’t sure he’s made the right move.
“He’s won the league twice, he was going for his third treble. I think if he had stayed until the end of the season and won another treble, everyone would say ‘well done, you’re moving on because of (lack of) money’ and so forth.
“I think we’ve got be realistic and say that the Premier League, with the money that’s involved and the ability to buy in the top players, that’s the big attraction for Brendan,” said Bonner.
“Can they do better than Celtic in Europe? Well they haven’t. Can they win as many trophies as Celtic? No they can’t.
“Celtic is a huge club worldwide, with a fantastic fan base.
“A number of years ago, Leicester probably would have been on a lower level than Celtic but now, after winning that league a couple of years ago, and the history they are building up, you could say they are on a par.
“But Celtic fans will say that Celtic is the club and he’s let them down.”
